Description:
From a process standpoint, the most important column internals are the liquid distributors. It is required at all locations in the column where an external liquid stream is introduced. In addition to providing a uniform liquid distribution pattern to the top of the packed bed, the product must provide sufficient gas passage area to avoid a high-pressure drop or liquid entrainment. It should have a high turndown ratio and be resistant to fouling. The table listed below gives some conventional distributors.

deviations between the individual drip points less than 5% guaranteed, mostly less than 3%

70 to >250 per m2 (depending on application and liquid load)

depending on the design of the distributor <0.1 to >250 m3/m2/h(it for 20 litres/m2/h have been successfully applied e.g.distillation of glycerine)

standard turn down ratio 1:3(higher ranges of loading – e.g. 1:10 and more – are achievable by using multi-stage distributors)Design know-how for viscous liquids

Diameter:
Distributor for diameters from 70 mm to 12 m and bigger.
- The same principle of design for diameters from 200 mm to >12 m.
- Liquid feeding by pre-distribution system adapted to therespective application.

Contamination:
Designs which are insensitive to dirt and in particular to sedimentable impurities.
- Simple adjustability by standard fitter’s tools.
- Solid fixing at the column wall.
- Assembly and inspection of the liquid distributors through manholes for columns from DN 800. In smaller columns assembly is effected through shell flanges.
